Digital Reflection

The Digital divide and digital colonialism can not only affect each other but also affect digital social activism. Digital divide is the gap between the people who and do not have access to the internet. There are places not only in the world but in the United States that do not provide people with access to the internet. The lack of access to the internet can affect people's ability to learn and access information. Also, people living with no access to the internet are slow to progress within society. Students living in these places are not able to learn and indulge into their education as to students living in places with technology more developed. Because western countries are more developed with technology they can control the digital services in developing countries. These developing countries can not compete with the progression of technology in Western countries and they have the potential to be exploited by these Western countries. This is called digital colonialism. Internet services such as Google are allowing user's data from the cloud to be processed for consumer and business services. Furthermore, social media platforms can choose what is posted on their platforms which is restricting user' s freedom of speech. Although it is important for these companies to monitor what is posted on social media, these companies are destroying the message that people are trying to convey.

Digital social activism is the use of communication through technology for various forms of activism to create a quicker and more effective communication to people. Social media platforms can provide a place for racialized populations to bring awareness to racial injustices. Posting on social media allows issues to be see faster and forces people to deal with these issues head on without sweeping it under the rug. Overall, I believe that people deserve the freedom to access the internet, to learn and to say what they feel on social media. People living in developing countries do not have the freedom to access information and learning about these issues of the world. Also, social media platforms are additionally taking away people's freedom of speech when they take down a post they do not approve of.
